Pau Casals está considerado como uno de los grandes violonchelistas del mundo. Sus versiones de las Sonatas para violonchelo de J.S. Bach son modelos de interpretación. Fue, además, un defensor infatigable de la libertad y los derechos humanos, y un luchador hasta su muerte en 1973, en el exilio, contra la dictadura franquista en España. En el contenido de este disco el maestro nos ofrece un programa en el que se entremezclan intenciones políticas y calidad interpretativa.
El cant dels ocells es una canción popular catalana armonizada por el propio Casals y que convirtió en un canto a la libertad. Está acompañado por la Orquesta del Festival de Prades.
La Nana de Manuel de Falla, concebida originalmente para soprano y piano, está aquí armonizada para violonchelo y piano. Es una pieza intimista, el canto de una madre que arrulla a su bebé para que se duerma. Casals se siente arrastrado por la intensidad de la melodía que esta interpretando y no puede evitar canturrear (bastante desafinadamente, por cierto) en algunos pasajes. La parte de piano es interpretado por Eugène Istomin.
Finalmente, Sant Martí del Canigó es una suite orquestada por Casals sobre temas populares catalanes en torno al monasterio benedictino encaramado en la ladera del monte Canigó. Está interpretada por la Orquesta del Festival de Prades.
