El tema que hoy conocemos como Greensleeves tiene un origen remoto en el folclore inglés. Ralph Vaugham-Williams lo utiliza en su ópera Sir John in love. Años más tarde, en 1933, reescribirá ese tema como una Fantasía sobre Greensleeves para cuerdas, dos arpas y dos flautas, incluyendo un tiempo intermedio en forma de trío adaptando otra vieja melodía popular, Lovely Joana. Años antes había compuesto su romanza para violín y orquesta The lark ascending, inspirada en un poema de George sobre el vuelo de la alondra.
William Walton es un hábil sinfonista. Escribió la música para tres películas inspiradas en tragedias de Shakespeare, entre ellas “Enrique V”, de la que extrajo la passcaglia que evoca el cortejo fúnebre de Falstaff y otra melodía, asociándolas en las Dos piezas para cuerdas.
