Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) has been the promoter and best representative of the “verismo” in the Italian opera as a reaction against the romantic opera, of which “Cavalleria Rusticana” (1890) is the best example. He died in the indigence in 1945 after the fall of the Mussolini’s fascist regime of which Mascagni had been designed official composer. Among his operatic production only “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “L’Amico Fritz” survive.
Ruggiero Leoncavallo (1857-1919), a “verista” composer much influenced by Mascagni, scored about ten operas, from which only “I Pagliacci” continues on the stage in the operatic seasons.
What is important of this disk is that it shows a Beniamino Gigli in his best era, with a powerful voice perfectly adapted to the dramatic touch of the works he perform: Siciliana: O Lola and Addio alla Madre (with Giulietta Semionato) from “Cavalleria Rusticana”, and Vesti la Giubba and No, Pagliaccio non Son! (with Leone Paci) from “I Pagliacci”.
We listen the firsts ones in the version of the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala di Milano conducted by Pietro Mascagni. It is a recording made before 1945, probably done during the Mussolini’s regime. The second ones are performed by the same orchestra under the conduction of Franco Ghione.
