La Gioconda es la ópera más famosa de Amilcare Ponchielli y a su justa fama ha contribuido enormemente la Danza de las Horas, un pasaje bailable que tiene lugar en el Tercer Acto. Dicho pasaje consiste en una serie de danzas de estilo muy distinto, que representan las horas del día, enlazadas por un tema musical que se repite en distintas variaciones, para terminar con una última danza, un Allegro vivacísimo, que arrastra todo con un brío irresistible.
La obertura de Las Vísperas Sicilianas es para muchos la más hermosa de las compuestas por Giuseppe Verdi. Es, como otros pasajes de la obra verdiana, una metáfora de la Italia oprimida y dividida del siglo XIX, trasplantada a hechos históricos del siglo XIII. La obertura es música efectista, con sus alternancias de expresión violenta y lírica ternura.

La Gioconda is the most famous opera by Amilcare Ponchielli and to its just fame has contributed greatly the Dance of the Hours, a dance passage that occurs in Act III. This passage is a series of dances from a very different style, representing the hours of the day, linked by a theme that is repeated in different variations, ending with a final dance, an Allegro vivacissimo, which sweeps everything with irresistible verve.
The overture of Sicilian Vespers is for many the most beautiful one composed by Giuseppe Verdi.
