La “Pasión Según San Mateo”, BWV 244, es para muchos especialistas la obra cumbre del oratorio. Para mi gusto es, sencillamente, genial. Sorprende que una obra de tal calidad cayera en el olvido durante cerca de 100 años, hasta que fuera rescatada por Félix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy en 1829. Es una obra en la que se conjugan los pasajes intimistas, dramáticos, con las explosiones brillantes y solemnes de los coros.
Esta versión, la de Karl Münchinger, es una de las mejores, al viejo estilo reposado de Furtwängler. Fue grabada en 1965 en la iglesia Schloss Ludwigsburg de Stuttgart para conmemorar el 20º Aniversario de la fundación de la Orquesta de Cámara de Stuttgart. Comprende tres discos LP.
The “St. Mathew’s Passion”, BWV 244, is to many experts the summit of the oratory music. To my taste is simply genial. It is surprising that such a high quality work remained forgotten for near 100 years until it was re-discovered by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in 1829. It is a work where intimacy, dramatic parts are conjugated with brilliant, vibrant, solemn ones.
This version by Karl Münchinger is one of the best performances, to the old, reposed Furtwängler style. It was recorded in 1965 in the church Schloss Ludwigsburg (Stuttgart) to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the foundation of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. It is grooved on 3 LP disks.
