The composers of the early 20th century were forced to deal with problems relating to the linear widening of traditional patterns and tonalities that their predecessors left faced. The works on this album illuminate some of the ways in which the musicians of this time create a new music without abandoning the tradition. Ottorino Respighi was inspired to compose his Antiche Danze ed Arie per Liuto, appeared in 1917, 1924 and 1932 in the form of Suites for orchestra, in the 16th century Italian music. In the Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, work of 1936, predominates a pattern of melodic expression, which in any case, does not conceal the purely academic cannon structure of the work. Bela Bartok, who incorporated into his music folk rhythms and melodies, arranged in 1915 these Romanian Popular Dances for piano and many years later, in 1971, for orchestra (presented here in a transcription for string orchestra). Benjamin Britten wrote his Simple Symphony in 1925 at the age of 12, later revised and published in 1934.
