Oscar Esplá's music reflects his huge effort to overcome the musical nationalism without sacrificing the Spanish Levantine inspiration, that of his homeland, as raw material for his works. Although self-taught, he followed closely the European musical avant-gardes taking of them those techniques best suited to the transformation of his musical language. The Sonata de Sur, Op 52, a real concerto for piano and orchestra not without romantic overtones, is committed to the use of dodecaphonic elements. Thirty years later, in 1964, when he writes Sinfonía Aitana, Op 56, the twelve-tone music and serialism had given all they could give and Esplá back somewhat to the emotional, melodic music without sacrificing the conquest of atonality. In fact, this symphony bears an inscription: "To the tonal music, in memoriam."
