The Sylphs is a ballet usually included in their repertoire by almost all dance companies. But its present content has gone through several transformations. In 1894, Alexander Glazunov decided to orchestrate several Frederic Chopin’s pieces written for piano as a suite, which he titled Chopiniana. At turn of the 20th century, Michael Fokine presented this suite (with some new addition by Glazunov) as a ballet in St. Petersburg. Shortly after was changed the content of Chopiniana abandoning almost all Glazunov’s arrangements and adding others by Keller, and so was presented in 1908. The following year Diaghilev brought it to Paris with new orchestrations by Stravinsky, renaming it as The Sylphs. Since then the name has become popular, but there are several orchestrations. The present recording follows the Roy Douglas’ one.

La Source is fruit of the collaboration of two composers: Leo Delibes and Leon Minkus. The parts written by Delibes were well received and served to pave his way as a composer. Delibes himself drew his pieces and, with some additions, formed another ballet named Naïla that is represented on some occasions. The recording of this record corresponds to a selection of parts of La Source by Delibes.
